ToughStep® – double stick underlay.
ToughStep® has been specifically engineered as a double-stick underlay for commercial applications, or for natural floor coverings such as sisal, where a firmer underlay is essential.
Its structure is stronger and denser than standard foam underlays, providing greater stability and resilience. This delivers superior performance for natural carpets like sisal, which are rigid and have almost no elasticity compared to wool or synthetic carpets. A firmer underlay helps keep these floorcoverings stable and prevents rippling or distortion. In addition, ToughStep’s firmness allows office chairs, wheeled furniture, and wheelchairs to move with less resistance when installed using a double-stick method.
We also test to ISO International Standards and British Standards

Memory foam vs standard recycled foam
Why is memory foam better than standard foam? Well the graph speaks for itself, but simply – under compression testing, standard foam recovers 78% as opposed to our underlays which are up to 92%.
This graph also indicates our foams hold their thickness better in the long run which in return results in a longer life performance of your carpet, enhanced comfort properties underfoot and less furniture indentation marks.

A brief overview: how to install ToughStep.
Please read our advanced specification sheet for further advice how to install. Always follow BS5325:2021 guidelines.
First, ensure that the subfloor is sound, smooth, dry, and level in accordance with BS5325:2021. Room temperature should be preferable 18oc – 35oc. Subfloor should not fall below 10oC. Carpet and underlay, tapes and adhesive should remain on site for 24 hours to acclimatise.

1.
Apply tackifier to the subfloor using a roller, brush or trowel. Allow it to cure before laying the underlay. Follow adhesive recommendations.

2.
Roll out the underlay with the double-stick side facing upwards. Lay the runs at 90° to the carpet seams and reverse the direction of each adjoining length. Butt all edges tightly together with no gaps and use bonding tape for all joins. Make sure all joints are flat and level.

3.
Apply the carpet adhesive evenly to the carpet backing using a notched trowel.

4.
Lay the carpet into the wet adhesive and smooth out the surface using a glider to remove any air bubbles or excess material.
